Novelist in Progess: J.A. Bennett

Novelist in progress…in which we chat with a promising soon-to-be-published author.

Name: J. A. Bennett_jenniecrop
Hometown: Orem, Utah
Author’s Website
Current Residence: Tooele, Utah
Favorite Read: Anything YA, especially romance.

Pet Peeves: Being late, and people who drive too slow ahead of me.
If You Weren’t a Writer You’d Be…Is there really any other option? For me it’s always been about
writing. I can’t see myself doing anything better. Can I be a professional reader? [Laughter]

Work in Progress: The Definition of Awkward, YA romance about a girl who’s well…awkward.

What I’m Learning About the Craft So Far: The number one thing I want to do is always improve my writing. Right now I’m focusing on less repetition and more new ideas, but really that’s just the beginning of I’ve learned so far. There’s such an intricate balance between voice, style, and good writing that it would be impossible to learn it all at once. It’s something that has to be constantly whittled away at, and maybe not ever perfected.

How I Deal With Writer’s Block: First and foremost, I keep writing. Even if it’s just a couple of
sentences. Writing is the most important part. Then I commiserate with friends and look for ideas in new places. But mostly I think over my issues until I pass that hurtle.

My Plot Philosophy: Read Save the Cat. It’ll change your plotting life. Although I never stick to my original ‘beats’, it’s always nice to have a direction as I write.

My Long Term Plan As An Author: Keep writing. As long as I’m writing, I’m doing something right.
Yes, I’d like to have lots of books out and even make that coveted bestseller list, but none of that can happen without writing first. So my long term plan is to write and keep working on my goals. The best thing about this journey is that it can take me places I’ve never dreamed of going, I’m just happy to be along for the ride.
